Professional Yoga Therapist™ Overview Statement
The PYTS™program was born in 2001 and came to full fruition in 2005. Since that time, we have enrolled hundreds of students in our program.* PYTS™ Yoga Therapist Certification is an advanced education program that requires applicants hold an existing medical license. Our program exclusively admits licensed health care professionals who want to specialize in Yoga Therapy as a healing art. Students will learn to incorporate Yoga into their clinical practices, as well as be prepared to teach Yoga to individuals and groups in fitness, corporate, or other similar setting. Students will spend time in class, teaching, observing, oral practical, and in independent home study and testing. Upon graduation, the student will have more than 900 hours of experience and study. Our program is also Yoga Alliance recognized and provides a professional designation of Professional Yoga Therapist™, PYT™, as well as Registered Yoga Teacher, RYT.
PYTS™ believes yoga therapy is about learning to facilitate functional patterns within asana and pranayama and to identify and guide a student toward managing dysfunctional ones. In addition, PYTS belives being a yoga therapist is not about just evaluation and prescription but rather an effective yoga therapist engages in constant self analysis & reflection, thereby deepening their self awareness before they attempt to deepen their students’ self awareness.
PYTS™believes that the practice of yoga therapy shifts or completely changes existing paradigms of health and wellbeing through combining the ancient experiential wisdom of yoga with modern research and rehabilitation, an ongoing event to contentedly anticipate and embrace.
Professional Yoga TherapyTM as a discipline, is a new profession that, when practiced by those trained in both western and eastern philosophies, addresses every facet of the being and spirit – psychological, physical, spiritual, emotional, and social, in order to bring ultimate evenness to the individual.
PYTS™exists to train the health care professional and to bring yoga therapy into western medical settings, as well as raise up a new hybrid of yoga therapist who can both treat patients and bring yoga and yoga therapy into the community for ultimate continuity of the highest quality of rehabiltative care.
America has the distinction of being the most obese, sedentary nation on earth. We work more hours per week, vacation less, suffer from the most stress related illnesses and have the highest rates for heart disease, stroke, and cancer than any other nation in the world. Now more than ever we need clinicians of Yoga who can therapeutically apply its benefits to a Nation of people with ever increasing complex medical illnesses, conditions, and stress related diseases.
PYTS™ believes that health care professionals’ backgrounds in exercise, anatomy, biomechanics, western psychology, development, and body awareness give them an advantage and an expertise that makes them the ideal practitioners to teach and apply Yoga therapeutically. The program combines the concepts of rehabilitation with the principles of Yoga and Ayurveda. Upon completion of the 4 level program, rehabilitation professionals can apply this information to all patient populations.
These courses were developed specifically for licensed health care professionals who want to transform their clinical practice and embrace eastern principles of medicine through Yoga and Ayurveda. Clinicians who want to expand their practice to include wellness and prevention concepts will also greatly benefit from having completed their training with PYTS™. PYTS™allows the clinician to study Yoga & Ayurveda side by side with other health care professionals, speaking in a post-graduate, post-professional level that allows for a highly clinical and applicable dialogue.
Clinicians who are able to offer Professional Yoga Therapy™ are unique and few. Professional Yoga Therapists earn more for their services as specialists in eastern and western medicine becuase they can offer a more comprehensive approach to healing. Incorporating Yoga into one’s clinical practice and extending Yoga & Yoga Therapy sessions to the general public is an excellent opportunity for health care professionals to diversify practices with cash based programming, offer excellent continuity of care, and to bring yoga to the western medical community to offer whole body healing.
*The PYTS program is specifically for licensed health care progressionals, although we have admitted some highly trained yoga teachers who have health care degrees or work under the close supervision of licensed health care professionals in a health care setting. These people obtain the training and receive continuing education credit with Yoga Alliance, but do not receive the credential of PYT as it is reserved for the licensed health care professional.
